I still needed the USB to Serial adapter, and this machine did not have an CD ROM drive, so I bought an external one that plugs into a USB port (about $60 at Best Buy). With Windows 7 Professional, you can run Commander 950 in XP Compatibility mode. The other versions like Home will not work. Usually, the cheapest and easiest way is to get Windows 7 Professional. But is discovered that YOU HAVE TO HAVE A WINDOWS 7 THAT SUPPORTS XP COMPATIBILITY MODE.
I figured I was doomed, as this was a 64 bit machine. It came with Windows 7, and at first it was no joy with Commander 950. So, I pickup up a nice little Acer Aspire One. The Toshiba worked for a long time, but it was big, and had poor battery life. The trick with them is to open device manager in Windows control panel, and check which com port number it is assigned to. They are available many places (like Best Buy, for instance). The other hitch was no serial port, so I had to get a USB to Serial adapter. As others have mentioned, you just have to right click and run in Windows Compatibility mode, and everything will be fine. This computer had a CD drive, but the Commander 950 software can be copied to a CD and installed from there, so this is not a problem. NO 64 BIT MACHINES WILL WORK DIRECTLY WITH COMMANDER 950. Windows Vista also came on 64 bit machines. Next up was a nice, newer Toshiba laptop running Windows Vista 32 bit. Mine lasted 3 years, until the display failed. The commander 950 software does not require much computing speed or memory, so almost any one will do. Old laptops with Windows XP are still out there, and they might even still have a floppy drive and a serial port.
It was a 32 bit machine running Windows XP Service Pack 3. I started off with a low powered Dell laptop that I got at a second hand store. In that time, laptops and software have come and gone.
I have been using it in a Porsche 911 turbo for about 8 years now. I just wanted to post up what I have discovered about running Holley Commander 950 software.
